Hertel sponsored legislation to let violent criminals out of prison early
In 2021, then-Senator Curtis Hertel sponsored legislation (SB 649) that would allow violent criminals out of prison early, with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the victim.
Any violent criminal, except those sentenced to life in prison, would be allowed to leave prison early by earning “credits” toward that release.
Hertel also authored legislation in 2020 (SB 1049) that would allow adults up to 26 years old, to be sentenced as a juvenile and receive a lighter sentence - even violent felonies.
Hertel supported efforts to make Lansing a “Sanctuary City,” shielding illegal immigrants from arrest or deportation, and even qualify to special benefits.
Hertel opposes state and local law enforcement from enforcing immigration law, including detainment of illegal immigrants.
