Hertel sponsored legislation to let violent criminals out of prison early

  • In 2021, then-Senator Curtis Hertel sponsored legislation (SB 649) that would allow violent criminals out of prison early, with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the victim.

  • Any violent criminal, except those sentenced to life in prison, would be allowed to leave prison early by earning “credits” toward that release.

  • Hertel also authored legislation in 2020 (SB 1049) that would allow adults up to 26 years old, to be sentenced as a juvenile and receive a lighter sentence - even violent felonies.

  • Hertel supported efforts to make Lansing a “Sanctuary City,” shielding illegal immigrants from arrest or deportation, and even qualify to special benefits.

  • Hertel opposes state and local law enforcement from enforcing immigration law, including detainment of illegal immigrants.
